Chapter 11 The King Descends from the Sky
Chapter 11 The King Descends from the Sky
"I swear! Don't let me run into those bastards from the city's police department, or I'll kick their asses!"
Li Ang said fiercely as he carried the detective girl and ran around the alley.
He had been running through this maze-like alley for more than ten minutes.
Moreover, he believed that he had made a big enough commotion, attracting the attention of at least half a block of residents who curiously opened their windows to peek out.
So far, not a single police officer has been seen.
No, not even a single police dog showed up, let alone the police.
And the group of cultists behind him were still chasing him!
No, bro! You guys are cult members! Do you have to be so blatant about it?
That's not how it's supposed to go. You're supposed to gather together at night, and if you're discovered, run away in a panic, acting very cautiously, hoping as few people as possible know.
Instead of a dozen people chasing him with knives in broad daylight, yelling and screaming.
Do you even know what a cult member is?!
Charlotte leaned on his shoulder, her eyes half-closed, her long white hair swaying with the rhythm of their running.
"Pochi, run faster. I don't want to die again," she said with a smile.
"Before you say that, can you get down and run by yourself?"
"That won't do." The detective buried her face in his shoulder, her tone languid. "I'm not wearing shoes."
Enraged, Li Ang decided to stop indulging her.
He stopped, put Charlotte against the wall, then put his hands on his knees and pretended to be out of breath.
"I'm out of energy." He gasped for breath, his shoulders heaving. "You run by yourself."
The reason I carried her away just now was out of gratitude for her helping me awaken my abilities; it doesn't mean I have to be her princess-carrying knight forever.
He was particularly annoyed by the woman's nonchalant and indifferent attitude.
"You really can't run anymore?" Charlotte looked at Li Ang suspiciously, her eyes narrowing.
"Really." Li Ang quickly pretended to be exhausted, adding two coughs, "Cough cough... my lungs are about to explode."
"Okay." Charlotte glanced down.
Her small feet, encased in white stockings, stepped onto the muddy ground, and the dust and mud quickly seeped in, staining the white stockings grayish-brown.
Her brow furrowed slightly, but quickly relaxed again.
"You carried me for 760 steps, so let's say 768 shillings."
"What do you mean?"
"Your payment," Charlotte said slowly, "I'm not one of those fat, bloodsucking parasites in the factory. Isn't it perfectly reasonable to pay my assistant?"
One shilling equals twelve pence. Seven hundred and sixty-eight shillings, while he could only earn four pence a day carrying sacks at the dock.
How many sacks of sand would I have to carry to earn that much?
"Actually..." Li Ang instantly resumed normal breathing, his back straightened, and he stopped panting. He looked refreshed and energetic. "I think I can hold on a little longer."
His gaze swept over Charlotte, and judging from the feel of her, she should weigh less than 100 pounds. He could hold her for another two hours without any problem.
Li Ang had already started calculating in his mind how much money he could make by running back to the slums.
"Too late." Charlotte turned her head and looked at the end of the alley. There, the figures of the cultists had already appeared.
"However," she added, "I do agree with what you just said. Those guys in the city's police department are really getting more and more useless."
The City Sheriff's Department, equivalent to the police force in London, primarily handles cases involving non-supernatural abilities, but also has jurisdiction over some cases caused by cult members.
Of course, this is on the premise that the case does not involve people with special abilities. If it does, then armed detectives must be called in.
"These cultists are getting bolder and bolder." Charlotte flexed her wrists, the dirt on her white stockings making her uncomfortable. "Maybe we need to find a chance to clean them up properly."
"Exactly." Li Ang echoed, his right hand forming a fist at his side, and a black blade slowly appeared. "What kind of cult members appear in broad daylight and chase people all over the streets..."
The swords he summons do not seem to need to be retrieved by him; they will automatically dissipate after being released from his hand for a period of time. At the same time, he can summon multiple swords.
Li Ang wanted to tell the detective to stay away so she wouldn't get hurt in the melee, but Charlotte suddenly reached out and pulled Li Ang to the side.
The next second, a bullet grazed his abdomen and hit the brick wall behind him.
"Pochi, be careful," Charlotte said, loosening his collar.
You still say you don't know martial arts?
How could an ordinary person possibly achieve such reaction speed and timing?
However, what shocked Li Ang even more than this was—
Those cultists have guns!
"What the hell... what about the gun control system? Save us!" Li Ang couldn't help but curse out loud.
As if hearing his call, a figure descended from the sky.
Golden twin tails fluttered in the night wind as the girl landed on the ground, creating a shallow crater, with pebbles scattering at her feet.
She was dressed in a black and white uniform that allowed for easy movement, with handcuffs hanging from her belt, but what was most striking was what she was carrying on her shoulder.
It was a huge weapon, resembling a rocket launcher from later times, with runes engraved on its body.
"Don't move!" The girl pointed the cannon at the cultists in the alley.
The cultists' faces instantly turned even darker than their robes, and a few of the bolder ones even brandished short knives and charged at her.
The blonde girl pulled the trigger without hesitation.
A blue beam of light shot out from the cannon and struck the cultist at the front of the charge directly. Under the beam, the cultist's body was instantly vaporized, leaving not a trace of dust.
The remaining cult members were stunned, and Li Ang was also stunned, his eyes wide open.
Where did I come from? Is this still Victorian London? Even in a world of superpowers, how come they've even come up with laser cannons?
"You are suspected of participating in illegal sacrifices, kidnapping, murder, and violating Article 17 of the Detective Association's Regulations on the Use of Superpowers."
The blonde girl, carrying the enormous weapon, stared coldly at the cultists. "Now, as an armed detective from the Detective Association, I hereby formally arrest you. Surrender obediently."
No one would willingly surrender, and the cultists turned and ran.
"Don't run away! If you run again, I'll fire!" The blonde girl frowned, picked up the laser cannon, and chased after them.
She moved quickly, disappearing around the alley corner in a few breaths, but before leaving, she made a point of saying:
"Stay where you are, don't move. I'll be right back."
