Chapter 42 Lin Fangfei and Gu Zixuan: Struggle and Love, Conspiracy Unveiled, Love Trapped in a Desp

Lin Fangfei and Gu Zixuan: Struggle and Love in Republican-Era Shanghai

As the conspiracy unfolds, a desperate counterattack takes place.

The morning in Shanghai was shrouded in a thin mist, but this mist could not conceal the anger and anxiety in my heart. Looking at the raw materials in the textile factory warehouse, which were in complete disarray, my hands clenched into fists, my nails almost digging into my palms.

"This is absolutely outrageous!" I said through gritted teeth, my eyes practically spitting fire.

Gu Zixuan, standing to the side, was also furious. His brows were tightly furrowed, and his usually gentle eyes were now filled with coldness. He squatted down, picked up a piece of torn fabric, and examined it carefully. "Fangfei, they're trying to drive us to our doom."

I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. "Zixuan, we can't be defeated like this. We must find a way to solve the raw material problem, otherwise the textile factory will really be finished."

Gu Zixuan stood up, dusted himself off, and said, "I'll contact other suppliers right away to see if we can urgently allocate some raw materials. You should reassure the workers in the factory first, so that they don't panic."

I nodded, watching his hurried departure, silently praying that he could resolve the problem smoothly.

I turned and walked into the workshop. The workers gathered around me, their faces full of worry. An older worker sighed and said, "Ms. Lin, what are we going to do? Without raw materials, we're all going to be out of work."

I forced a smile and reassured everyone, "Don't worry, Mr. Gu has already started looking for a solution. Our textile factory has overcome so many difficulties, and we'll definitely get through this one too."

Although I said that, I wasn't really sure. Just then, my good friend Su Yao arrived. She was wearing a plain-colored cheongsam today, her hair was simply tied up, and she looked a little anxious.

"Fangfei, I heard there was an accident at the textile factory, so I rushed over," Su Yao said, holding my hand.

I briefly explained the situation to her, and Su Yao frowned and thought for a while. "I know a friend who is in the raw materials business. I'll go ask him if he can help."

I looked at her gratefully, "Yaoyao, thank you."

After Su Yao left, I continued to work in the factory, comforting the workers while considering what other options there were if the raw materials couldn't arrive on time.

A few days later, Gu Zixuan returned dejectedly. His hair was somewhat disheveled, his clothes were not as neat as usual, and his eyes were full of fatigue and frustration.

"Fangfei, I've contacted all the suppliers I can reach, but they either don't have enough stock or they're afraid to offend that mysterious organization and refuse to sell to us," Gu Zixuan said in a low voice.

My heart sank to the bottom. "What can we do? Are we just going to watch the textile factory go bankrupt?"

Just when we were in despair, Gu Zixuan's father suddenly arrived at the textile factory. He was wearing a dark gray long gown, his steps were steady, and his eyes revealed a firmness.

“Zixuan, Fangfei, I’ve heard about what happened at the textile factory. We can’t just sit here and wait to die. I have an idea,” said Father Gu.

We all looked at him, a glimmer of hope in our eyes.

Mr. Gu continued, “We can try to find the source of raw materials ourselves. I know that in some small towns around Shanghai, there are some small workshops. Although they are not large in scale, they may be able to provide the raw materials we urgently need.”

Gu Zixuan's eyes lit up. "Father, that's a good idea. But can those small workshops produce enough to meet our needs?"

Father Gu nodded slightly. “We can unite them and coordinate their efforts. Although the process will be difficult, it’s better than sitting and waiting for death.”

So we immediately set to work. Gu Zixuan and I followed Gu's father and visited each of the small workshops.

In a small town, we entered a workshop that looked somewhat dilapidated. The owner of the workshop was a kind and honest uncle, wearing a coarse cloth shirt, who seemed a little surprised to see us.

"Who are you?" the uncle asked, puzzled.

Mr. Gu smiled and said, “Uncle, we’re from Shanghai. Our textile factory is facing some difficulties and we’d like to buy some raw materials from you.”

The man frowned. "Our production here isn't very high."

I stepped forward and said sincerely, "Uncle, we know your production is limited. But we are desperate now. If you can help us, we will definitely give you a reasonable price, and we will cooperate with you for a long time."

The man thought for a moment, then said, "Alright, I can give you all the raw materials I have here. However, that's all I can provide."

So we talked to each company one by one, and slowly we collected some raw materials. Although the quantity was still far from enough, it was at least a glimmer of hope.

However, just as we were feeling relieved that things were starting to look up regarding raw materials, new problems arose.

After Gu Zixuan's uncle learned of our plan to collect raw materials, he began to spread rumors within the family, saying that we were wasting the family's resources, that the textile factory was beyond saving, and that we should not invest any more money in it.

Some of the elders in the family, after hearing his words, began to doubt our actions.

One day, the family held a meeting to discuss whether to continue supporting our plans.

At the meeting, Gu Zixuan's uncle said emphatically, "Brother, look at what Zixuan and Miss Lin are doing. They're just wasting their time and money on this small textile factory. The textile factory is a mess now. We should focus our energy on saving the Gu family business instead of wasting time and money on this small textile factory."

Father Gu frowned and said, "Second son, how can you say that? If the textile factory can be saved, it will also benefit the Gu family business. Besides, we can't just stand by and watch it go bankrupt."

Looking at the expressions of the family elders, I felt a little nervous. I stood up, took a deep breath, and said, "Elders, I know you have doubts about our plan. However, we have already made some progress. Given a little more time, we are confident that we can get the textile factory back up and running. Moreover, the existence of the textile factory has a significant impact on the reputation of the Gu family business. If we give up now, what will the outside world think of the Gu family?"

A respected elder in the family pondered for a moment and said, "Miss Lin, what you say makes some sense. However, we cannot ignore the risks. Can you guarantee that you will succeed?"

I bit my lip. "I can't guarantee we'll succeed, but I can guarantee we'll give it our all."

Just as everyone was arguing, a servant rushed in and whispered a few words in Gu's father's ear. Gu's father's face suddenly turned very ugly.

"Everyone, I just received news that some of the small workshops we contacted have suddenly backed out and said they will no longer sell us raw materials," Mr. Gu said gravely.

Everyone looked at each other in bewilderment upon hearing the news. Gu Zixuan's uncle, however, revealed a smug smile.

My mind was filled with doubt. What was going on? Why did those small workshops suddenly back out? Was someone pulling strings behind the scenes? If so, was that person Gu Zixuan's uncle? Or had that mysterious organization made a new move? This sudden turn of events was like a huge mystery, once again shrouding us in the shadow of despair. We had to solve this mystery as soon as possible, otherwise the textile factory would truly be doomed.

Lin Fangfei and Gu Zixuan: Struggle and Love in Republican-Era Shanghai

The predicament is difficult to break, and the fate of the enterprise is at stake.

The Shanghai wind, carrying a slight chill, blew into the oppressive conference room, but it couldn't dispel the tension and suspicion that permeated the air. I stood there, feeling as if I were in the eye of a storm, with all eyes around me like sharp arrows.

Gu Zixuan's uncle's smug smile was like a thorn in my eye. I was filled with anger, but I knew this was not the time to act rashly. I gripped the hem of my clothes tightly, trying to keep my voice calm, "Elders, I think this matter is very strange. Those small workshops had already agreed to our terms, and now they've suddenly gone back on their word. There must be a reason."

Mr. Gu nodded, his eyes thoughtful. "I also think this matter is not simple. We can't just give up like this; we have to find out who is behind this."

Gu Zixuan stood up, his eyes firm and resolute. "Father, I will investigate. I must find the mastermind behind this."

I looked at him, a warm feeling welling up inside me. I knew that no matter what difficulties we encountered, he would be by my side, facing them together. "Zixuan, I'll go with you," I said.

Gu Zixuan's uncle sneered from the side, "Don't waste your energy. It's obvious that those small workshops see no hope for the textile factory and don't want to lose money. It's stupid of you to insist on investigating who's behind it all."

I glared at him fiercely. "Uncle, the matter hasn't been investigated thoroughly yet, how can you be so sure?"

Gu Zixuan and I left the Gu family mansion and decided to first visit the small workshop closest to Shanghai that had changed its mind.

We rode in a rickshaw along the bumpy road. Gu Zixuan sat beside me, his hand tightly holding mine, as if giving me strength. Looking at his resolute profile, my unease lessened slightly.

It was already evening when we arrived at the small workshop. The workshop was quiet, with only one worker sweeping at the entrance. When the worker saw us, a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes.

I stepped forward, smiled, and asked, "Hey buddy, is your boss here?"

The waiter replied somewhat nervously, "The boss isn't here. What do you need?"

Gu Zixuan stepped forward, took out a silver dollar and handed it to the shop assistant, "Brother, we just want to ask why your boss suddenly changed his mind and refused to sell us the raw materials?"

The man looked at the silver dollar, then at us, hesitated for a moment, and then whispered, "Actually, I'm not too sure either. It's just that a few menacing-looking people came yesterday, and they talked to the boss inside for a long time. After that, the boss said he wouldn't do business with you anymore."

Gu Zixuan and I exchanged a glance, and we both knew the answer. Someone was definitely threatening the owner of the small workshop.

"Hey buddy, do you remember what those people looked like?" I asked.

The man thought for a moment, “They were wearing black short jackets and looked fierce. One of them had a long scar on his face.”

After thanking the shopkeeper, Gu Zixuan and I left the small workshop.

"Fangfei, it seems that mysterious organization has made its move again," Gu Zixuan said, frowning.

I nodded. "They'll stop at nothing to stop us."

After returning to Shanghai, we decided to consult my good friend Su Yao about our next move. Su Yao received us at her small villa. Today, she was wearing a light blue dress and a delicate hair clip in her hair.

"Fangfei, Zixuan, you both look exhausted. How's the investigation going?" Su Yao asked with concern.

I told her what I had learned in the small workshop. After listening, Su Yao pondered for a while, "I think we can start with the person with the scar on his face. I have friends in some underground forces in Shanghai, I can ask them to help me find out more."

I looked at her gratefully, "Yaoyao, thank you. You always help us when we need you most."

Su Yao smiled. "We're friends, after all. But you should be careful too. This mysterious organization looks dangerous."
