Chapter 93: We got this in the bag.
Inside of a decently sized cell, All Briana had were four walls and her own mind slowly tearing her apart. All that popped in her head were memories she took for granted.
When her father took her and her mother to a play when she was five. When she got lost hunting and her dad spent hours trying to find her, eventually finding her with a sprained ankle near a lake. Never had she went hunting alone after that.
Pushups were the main thing she was doing. The main thing she wanted to focus on was moving her body as she fought back tears.
’How could I have let this happen?’ Deep down she felt at fault, after all even though he father had control, as a young ruler she had to step up to the plate and when it was her time to vanquish the enemy she fumbled and failed.
Bottom line, end of story. she had spent the early part of the mourning thinking about everything, almost wallowing in self pity.
That would be the biggest mistake imaginable. The next Time she was given the opportunity, she wouldn’t fuck it up.
"Never again." She said determinedly. Eventually her arms got tired, so she began doing sit-ups, and any other exercises that she could get in until failure.
Thank the goddess she was in a cold cell, even then she was still sweating. She would soon have to start looking for a place to wash
Herself.
Usually it was every day with no issues, and the thought of this going on any longer was driving her a bit crazy.
She would be in much worse conditions on the battlefield however. Now was not the time to worry about appearances however much she was already doing so.
And now as Briana stares at the ceiling of her cell, she is tired and alone, the feeling of uselessness eating her alive. "Am I doing enough?"
Should she just leave with no plan? What if something happens to Marlo? How much longer can she be as confident as she is?
Eventually some footsteps approach her door.
She looks up exited to see Marlo, only to be greeted by two regular guards. One of them smacked the cell door with his sword, staring at her with eyes full of resentment.
"This is your final warning you brat, be silent or I’m telling Amanda and she can see what’s wrong with you personally. You understand?"
Briana normally would’ve laughed at such insults, now she was just angry. She knew for a fact that these worthless nobodies were nothing in the eyes of Amanda and had no way of contacting her.
They most likely weren’t even supposed to be stationed here either.
It took a lot for her to change her expression not to one of anger, but to a more mellow and jokey one.
"You guys are right. I’m doing a lot right now. Just for you, I’ll even stand up and apologize."
The guards outside the cell had smug grins on their faces. As Briana stood up, they began their yammering once more.
"I’m glad to finally be getting some respect around here, it seems even nobles can learn their place. Maybe there’s hope for us all."
As she stood up, she neared the cell door before accurately spitting through the small hole. Briana’s cell was of a decent size, and its door was like a normal metal one, with a small opening for guards to see her. She had just spat through that.
"You stupid bitch!" One of the men instantly began trying to fiddle with the lock to no avail.
Eventually more footsteps came and a man yelled from behind them.
"What are you two doing here? Show me your posts and exactly what the hell you should be doing. Right now."
They began getting a bit nervous. The one who hadn’t been spit on stepped back a bit.
"Relax man, we’ll leave. I didn’t know the requirements to guard the princess was to be a stick in the mud."
The *SHING* could be heard as the man drew his blade. "You will leave right now."
"It’s not worth it, come on." One man looked towards the other, and they quickly walked away, heading back upstairs.
Waiting unti they left, Marlo peeked through with a worried expression. "You must be going through it in here huh?"
Briana shook her head. "It’s mainly just being angry for not doing anything substantial at the moment. And...."
She seemed to trail off, though Marlo knew exactly why. "Your father was a decent man.
He wasn’t perfect, but he had his moments.
What I do know is that you don’t deserve to suffer from his mistakes."
Briana nodded her head. It was nice not being alone with her thoughts in these rare moments. She locked eyes with him, wanting to keep looking at a familiar face when surrounded by enemies. "Thanks for the reassurance."
Unfortunately due to all that exercise, her stomach rumbling ruined the moment. Her body required food. Briana embarrassingly
Put her hand over her face as the grumbling got louder.
Just then Marlo wanted to bang his head against the cell. He almost forgot the main reason he came here.
He delivered her a piece of chicken and one of those pastries she enjoys that are filled with strawberry jam.
As she tears it apart, he stand by, watching and making sure nobody catches her.
Once she was done, she quickly handed him the remains of her food. "Thanks...again."
Marlo shook his head. "I owe your family more than I can repay, however it’s time for some good news. We have a few new members coming in who are already making waves."
Briana was intrigued. She needed something good. "How so?"
A small smirk came up as he responded.
"Four captains dead."
"They also have a secret way to heal faster. I saw injuries on them one night that just vanished after a nights rest."
This was uplifting to say the least. "I’m glad. So, are is the overall army doing? Are we bringing in members quickly enough?"
That was a bit of a mixed bag. "They were being hunted en mass, but our newcomers dealt with the kill squad. We’re also putting spies in play to lead people into our ranks."
Long story short, they should start receiving reinforcements faster than ever. "We’re doing alright all things considered. Soon enough we should be able to break you out."
Though, having been told that, images of her father kept popping up in her head. "I’ve already lost my dad...I don’t wanna lose you too. Only break me out when we are guaranteed victory."
Marlo had seen enough of his people die. He too was secretly scared out of his wits, but that wasn’t what Briana needed right now. She needed someone who seemed like they had the situation under control.
"We are guaranteed victory. I believe in all of us. It’s not dumb to think that."
He stuck his hand through the viewing hole, prompting Briana to get up as well. She held his hand .
Marlo said the only thing he had on his mind.
"We’ll make it."
