Chapter 1034 - 981: If One Day We Grow Old (Part 2)
The only consolation was that he had grown old, yet Sienna Johnson was still by his side.
Thinking about it this way, getting old didn’t seem so scary.
Sienna Johnson emerged holding her son and saw Adrian Desmond leaning against the wall, watching those elderly folks with limited mobility.
She asked, "What are you looking at?"
"I’m wondering what I’ll be like when I’m old."
Sienna followed his gaze and replied with a smile, "When you’re old, and if you can’t walk anymore, I’ll push you outside to bask in the sun and go for walks."
"..."
"What if you can’t walk?"
"Then, of course, you’ll push me outside in the sun and go for walks."
"President Johnson, our director is looking for you." A young nurse noticed Sienna and approached, speaking.
Sienna handed her son to Adrian and went to attend to business.
...
Business went smoothly; after all, sourcing directly from Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory saved them quite a bit compared to going through middlemen.
Sienna also accepted an interview with the daily newspaper reporter.
Having achieved today’s objectives, Sienna felt quite pleased.
"All done?"
"Yeah, let’s head to the kindergarten to pick up Curly."
"Okay."
Sienna and Adrian stepped out and encountered a reporter, who stopped them.
"Hello, President Johnson, I’m Reporter Hogan from ’Circle In and Out.’ May I ask you a few questions?"
Sienna glanced at Reporter Hogan and declined, "If you want to interview me, you’ll need to schedule with my secretary first. I don’t accept unscheduled interviews."
Sienna shifted to block the son’s face from media exposure. Adrian understood Sienna’s concern and held the son vertically, facing his chest.
Seeing Sienna unwilling to be interviewed, Reporter Hogan turned his focus to Adrian.
"Mr. Desmond, is it true you’re from Abyanabad? May I ask how you and President Johnson met?"
Adrian shot him a sidelong glance with obvious disdain, as if saying: How dare a little ant speak to him.
"As a man, don’t you find ’marrying into a family’ shameful?" Reporter Hogan posed a sharp question.
Adrian initially planned to ignore him, but hearing this, Adrian stopped in his tracks, looking down at the man while holding his son.
Instead of directly answering, Adrian asked, "Are you jealous of me?"
"Why would I be jealous of you?" Reporter Hogan was baffled by his question.
"Because nobody would even want you, even if you were to marry into a family!"
Sienna held Adrian’s hand, saying, "Let’s go."
"Okay."
Not willing to give up, Reporter Hogan said, "In Orienta, only men who can’t afford to marry tend to marry into a family."
"..."
"You’re the kind of man who would abandon your parents and ancestors for money; you’re a disgrace to men!"
Adrian stuffed Sheehan into Sienna’s arms, ready to teach the provocateur reporter a lesson, but Sienna stopped him,
"We should go pick up Curly; we’ll be late."
"..."
"Your son is heavy; hold him yourself."
Sienna placed Sheehan back into Adrian’s arms, holding the child to ensure he wouldn’t go hit someone. Offending anyone, just not a reporter; who knows how they might misrepresent things."
"Let’s get going!"
The two bypassed the reporter, passed through the fountain, and headed to the parking lot to leave.
In the car, Adrian’s expression was grim as the reporter had angered him.
"Orienta men care about their reputation; marrying into a family is seen as disgraceful. You’ll face ridicule in the future..." Sienna cautiously broached the sensitive topic with him.
"..."
"People will say whatever they want. As long as we’re doing well, that’s enough."
"Can I hit people?" Adrian suddenly asked.
Sienna turned to look at him and said, "Absolutely not!"
"Then how should I handle such situations in the future?"
"Adrian, do you regret marrying into a family?"
"Why would I regret it?"
Regret comes from inferiority, from a man’s fragile and sensitive ego.
Men like Adrian, born as a privileged individual, despite later family downfall, built his career with his own hands.
He’s a strong individual; how could he feel inferior?
He got the woman he wanted and has their child; he’s truly a winner, bewildered by the others’ petty talk.
"Adrian..."
"Hmm?"
"I want to tell you, I love you very much! More than you can imagine!"
"Don’t play coy with me. If you really love me so damn much, show me tonight in bed!"
"Having visited the care home today, I realized you need a healthy lifestyle so we’ll be fit in our old age."
"No abstinence."
"Not abstinence, just some restraint!"
"I’ve been restraining myself! If I didn’t like you, I’d just take you to bed and do whatever I pleased without caring for your wishes."
"Thank Sixth Master’s leniency."
"No need to thank."
Sienna interlaced her fingers with his, recalling that elderly couple.
Enduring trials is passion; enduring simplicity is love.
It doesn’t always have to be intense, everlasting; it doesn’t always need to be love-unto-death, yet hand-in-hand, they can journey through life’s trials together, savoring its bitterness and sweetness, growing old together.
"Adrian, will we too grow old together like that elderly couple?"
"Of course!" Adrian said with certainty.
Sienna turned to him, flashing a radiant smile, words unspoken yet understood.
What is eternity? It’s walking from the earthly realm to the heavenly, all memories combined... it is eternity.
