Chapter 289: Big Spender
Chapter 289: Big Spender
Violet and Luna stood still for a moment, only tracking the movement of the City Lord with their eyes as she walked past them and into the gathered nobles, she immediately headed towards Lord Walter first, which made sense as he was the highest ranked noble besides her.
But before she reached him another figure walked past the two companions, this one being from her personal guard and resident sovereign.
As he walked past them his domain flaired up slightly as it impacted with the condensed bubble of Violet and Luna’s own presence.
They had merged their presences the moment that they had first felt his domain extend into the room, since then thay had not allowed it to drop. All that they had done was pull their presence back until it hugged close to their bodies.
So when the heavily armoured knight walked past and extended his domain towards them in an attempted show of force he was left somewhat surprised.
Kurtis was for lack of a better word, a bully. He was used to and quite enjoyed dominating others with his power, he was never one to miss up on a chance to showcase his own might.
When he first entered the room he had of course instantly taken note of the two powerful individuals that had managed to persevere through his domains suppression.
Yet, he had not given it much thought as he had not been truly attempting to exert his full power, it was merely a small display of his strength.
So whilst it did slightly irk him that they had managed to resist he did not worry too much.
Now however, he had truly attempted to exert his domain over the two beastkin. Yet he found himself entirely unable to do so.
Surrounding the two girls was a swirling barrier of pure presence, it was pure beyond his understanding, powerful beyond reason and held the essence of the wilds that utterly denied his domain of subjugation.
This fact surprised him so much that he actually stumbled slightly when he passed the two girls by as his eyes opened wide in shock.
Yet before he could truly react his lady made a curt gesture and he gritted his teeth as he moved to her side once again. His irritation at the two beastkin blooming as he burned their defiant gazes into his mind.
Violet and Luna shivered internally as the man passed them by. The naked frustration directed at them from the knight was anything but subtle.
Still they did not react past watch the pair walk off.
At that time Rose shakily got to her feet, she looked up at both companions with a mix of awe and shock in her eyes.
She was about to speak when Luna quickly interrupted the girl with a instant telepathic message. "Do not mention anything about that just yet. We can talk when we are in our private booth for the auction." Then before Rose could even reply she cut the connection and looked into the girls eyes.
Whilst it looked like rose had a belly full of questions she held them in for the short time until attendants once again entered the room and took the guests towards their own booth for the main event.
They were led towards a enclosed balcony that overlooked a packed hall of tiered seats that led towards a wide raised stage. The back half of the stage was hidden behind floor length blue curtains.
On the stage stood a beautiful human woman dressed in provocative yet still a professional red cocktail dress. It was clearly designed to showcase the woman’s beauty and likely to rile up the crowd.
Their balcony itself was a small but luxurious space. Two deep couches looked out over the stage below, a low table standing in front of them with a selection of beverages set up for the girls to enjoy.
When they walked in violet and Luna took one of the couches whilst Rose and her maid, Kirstie took the other one. Kirstie also took the initiative to begin pouring some drinks for eveyone present giving the two companions a glass of wine each.
It was only then that Rose spoke up. "How did you manage to stay standing back there? And why did the city lord speak to you both first?" It looked like she was about to start rattling off more questions but paused when Violet raised one hand with a smile.
"We managed to resist because we are strong. We are both approaching high tier 4, our presences are particularly strong so we were able to resist his domain easily enough once we had time to prepare ourselves."
Luna took over the conversation from there as Rose looked at the two girls with literal stars in her eyes. "And we are not exactly sure why she approached us first, but assume it is due to that exact same reason. We are two unknown and powerful individuals that have just entered her city, it’s not surprising that she is curious about us."
She was thinking about saying more but held herself back upon noticing Violet’s gaze.
"But enough of that, how does this auction work?" Violet quickly said to change the subject.
And as if in answer to her question the woman down below suddenly spoke up, her voice amplified with magic of some kind.
"Welcome ladies and Gentlemen, to todays action in the Sovereigns Vault. We have a wonderful selection of items up for sale this day that we are sure will catch all of your attention." She seductively leant forwards to display her cleavage slightly.
"My name is Olive and I shall be your host for todays event. Now some formality’s before we get started. To place a bid please raise the panel that you have with you at your seat, or for those in our VIP booths press the button on your table. you can either state a price out loud or if not we will go up by a standardised increase depending on the price of the item."
"Minimum price increase is 10% of initial valuation." Olive then paused as she looked about with a radiant smile before continuing. "How with that out of the way let the auction begin!" With that she gave a flourish to one side as another attractive woman walked out on the stage with a display case on a trolly.
"The first item up for grabs today is an ancient enchanted sword. It is beautifully crafted and holds powerful enchantments related to air and lightning elements. Starting price for this lovely sword is 10 gold coins."
Almost immediately paddles were raised in the crowd below, people began shooting out offers as they all observed the powerful sword being displayed below. Apparently it was quite the hot commodity as in now time the price had speed up to 80 gold.
It was then that the clear and powerful voice of the city lord rang out. "100 gold."
It was almost immediately after that when a second voice rang out, this time belonging to Violet as she glanced over at the booth housing the city lord with an arrogant smirk. "200 gold."
The room fell silent at the frankly absurd price increase, clearly no one had expected it, not even the city lord or the host as they both looked quite dumbstruck at her words.
Rose suddenly looked pale as she stared at Violet in incredulity, Luna simply raised an eyebrow at her companion in amusement as she instantly understood exactly what Violet was doing.
She had no need for that sword, she didn’t even use swords, plus it was the wrong element. So she had only offered that price jump to spite the city lord right from the get go.
"250 gold." Came the curt reply of the city lord.
And without more than a seconds delay Violet instantly upped her own bid. "350 gold."
Violet smiled as she saw the city lord frown in clear annoyance, both at being outbid, but mainly at how she had been out it. Whilst she had increased by 20 and then 50 gold each time, Violet on the other hand had jumped the price by a flat 100 gold each time.
So casually offering up so much money without a care in the world. Violet leaned forwards eager to see if the city lord would once again raise the price, her next offer already ready and waiting to be announced.
The hostess seemed to have regained her composure with a brilliant smile as she spoke up. "That’s 350 gold, going once. Going twice..."
"400 gold." Came the next big from the city lord, frustration lacing her words. Only for her offer to be instantly slapped down as not a moment later Violet gleefully raised the price once again.
"500 gold."
Half a platinum offered on the first item. An amount that would never normally be spent on any item in the early stage of any auction.
After several more moments of silence the hostess spoke up once again. "That is 500 gold, any more offers? No? Then, going once. Going twice. Sold for 500 gold to the big spender up in the balcony!"
And just like that, Violet had just displayed her overwhelming superiority when it came to wealth, a fact she was going to display for all to see in the upcoming auction.
